The Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung (BKHS) is launching a platform on Youth, Peace and Security (YPS). In 2015, the UN Security Council Resolution 2250 established the YPS agenda and recognised the important and positive role of young people in preventing conflicts and building sustainable peace. Young people are leading positive change worldwide – yet, a decade after the YPS agenda was formalised, youths’ expertise around peace and security is often dismissed.

With the new platform on YPS, the BKHS aims to continue the conversation on youth in relation to peace and security with youth as experts for these topics. The platform features contributions of young peacebuilders from across the world who work on YPS in different contexts. They deal with topics from the climate-YPS nexus, youth-led protests and localisation of YPS efforts to (lacking) ownership of the agenda among youth.
During the event, we will present how the platform can be of use for different stakeholders and discuss key insights and recommendations on:
- Youth perspectives on current peace and security trends
- Intergenerational collaboration on peace and security
- Operationalising the different pillars of the YPS agenda in Germany and beyond
We aim to bring diverse stakeholders from policy, bureaucracy and civil society together in a virtual room for an interactive discussion on the future of youth-led peacebuilding.
The YPS experts engaged in our Gen P(eacebuilder) project Paul Klahre (Germany), Hannah Koch (Germany), Christine Odera (Kenya), Datu Raid Salik (The Philippines) discuss with
- Dr. Martin Schuldes, Head of Division G 23: Peace and Security, Disaster Risk Management, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development
- Marthe Hanik, Desk Officer for Youth, Peace and Security, Federal Foreign Office
- Till Veerbeck-Stroetmann, Programme Officer for International Youth Policy, IJAB – International Youth Service of the Federal Republic of Germany
- Boris Mijatovic Member of the German Parliament (Bundestag)
The discussion will be moderated by Kirsten Hartmann (BKHS).
