Europe faces a series of existential challenges resulting from, among other things, Russia's war against Ukraine, the end of the United States's role as a traditional ally, the growing influence of right-wing populist forces and intense economic competition from China. Against this backdrop – and in order to remain capable of action and develop pragmatic solutions – Europe cannot stand alone. As the editors write in the introduction to this year's magazine: “Strong partnerships are not optional. They are an indispensable prerequisite for Europe's ability to act effectively on the international stage.”
Accordingly, our BKHS Magazine #5 is themed “Strengthening Partner Europe!” Authors from think tanks and academia along with BKHS experts develop recommendations for a Europe capable of action with strong partnerships. The publication presents concrete ideas through a variety of formats – essays, statements, photos and interviews – for how Europe can win new partners in various fields of cooperation and thereby secure its influence in the new multipolar order.
