UN peace missions and their future

United Nations peace missions in transition: What are the main challenges and prospects?

Authors: Kirsten Hartmann

Have you ever heard of the Blue Helmets? Since the first mission was deployed in 1948, United Nations (UN) peace operations have become one of the most visible instruments of the international community in conflicts. However, the missions are currently in crisis and have to adapt to new circumstances - their challenges range from resource shortages and geopolitical tensions, particularly in the UN Security Council, to changing conflict dynamics. Kirsten Hartmann from the European and International Politics programme line has been looking into questions relating to the status quo and the future of UN peace operations. On this page you will find a collection of articles on the missions and, for example, Germany's role in strengthening them.
