Event on November 10 at 7:00 pm
On 10 November 2015, the former Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt died. For the Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung (BKHS), this day provides an opportunity to honour his services to our democracy and our common life in Germany and Europe through a new format.
The Helmut Schmidt Lecture, the new European lighthouse project of the Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung (BKHS), invites a significant public figure to speak about a topic that already shaped Helmut Schmidt's political life and has not lost any of its significance to this day. The Lecture, which takes place annually at different European locations, is thematically closely linked to the foundation's three programme lines and is always realised in cooperation with a local institution.
The first lecture will take place this year on 10 November in Berlin in cooperation with the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) under the motto "Living Democracy!". It is a great honour to welcome the leader of the Belarus opposition, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, to deliver the first Helmut Schmidt Lecture.
After a welcome by Peer Steinbrück, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya will deliver the Helmut Schmidt Lecture 2021. Matthias Naß, Chief International Correspondent of Die Zeit, will chair the following discussion. We will end the evening with a reception and music by the German-Syrian band Shkoon, giving you space for networking and informal exchanges with representative of media, politics, think tanks, activism and civil society.
Participation is by personal invitation only.
