In recent years, the Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung has developed three exhibitions that present Helmut Schmidt’s character and the themes he focused on.
The permanent exhibition “Schmidt! Living democracy” at the foundation’s premises in Kattrepel has been open to visitors since June 2021.

The photographic exhibition “100 years in 100 pictures” was opened in time for Helmut Schmidt’s centenary and attracted more than 15,000 visitors to the centre of Hamburg. In parallel, in the lobby of the City Hall, large portraits of Schmidt were  put on display, accompanied by short captions recalling central events and lifelong themes for Schmidt, a freeman of the City of Hamburg.

The exhibitions, accompanying events and publications encourage interest in 100 years of contemporary German and international history. They also provide a forum for conversations and discussions, informed by contemporary history, about exciting topics from the past and present.

Hamburg Airport, now named “Hamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt”, has its own exhibition recalling “one of the greatest 20th century sons of Hamburg”. Visitors to the permanent exhibition at Terminal 2, based on materials from the Helmut Schmidt-Archiv, will find information on the life and work of this politician of the century.
