On 10 November 2015, the former German Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt died. Many still consider him a global statesman and thought leader who stood up for international peace, economic cooperation, democracy and a united Europe. Each year, the Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung therefore invites an outstanding public personality and “thought leader of today” to deliver the Helmut Schmidt Lecture and speak about a topic that already shaped Schmidt's life and that has not lost its relevance to this day.

The first lecture will be held in Berlin on 10 November this year, in cooperation with the Global Public Policy Institute (GPPi) and under the motto "Living Democracy!". It is a great honour to welcome the leader of the Belarus opposition, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, to deliver the first Helmut Schmidt Lecture.

After a welcome by Peer Steinbrück, Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will deliver the Helmut Schmidt Lecture 2021. Matthias Naß, Chief International Correspondent of Die Zeit, will chair the following discussion. We will end the evening with a reception and music by the German-Syrian band Shkoon, giving you space for networking and informal exchanges with representatives from media, politics, think tanks, activism and civil society.
