The Future of EU and US technology relations with China

July 5th, 2023 | 12:00 - 12:45 pm | FOTAR Discussion Series | Online

In December 2022, the biennial conference The Future of Transatlantic Relations organised jointly by the Europa-Kolleg Hamburg and the Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung brought together distinguished speakers from both sides of the Atlantic to discuss the changing politics of transatlantic trade relations. We invited six young scholars to join and contribute to the conference with their unique perspective. As FOTAR scholars, the next generation of transatlanticists continue our discussion from the conference in a virtual event series.

This event aims to promote the transatlantic conversation on strategies for the future of technological component production in the US and Europe.

FOTAR scholars Eric Maldonado and Melina Nitschker will discuss the complex implications of recent efforts to increase production capabilities in both the EU and the US with Dr. Nathalie Tocci, Director of the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI). What effect could this have on US-EU-China relations, considering the oftentimes ignored overlap of trade and security interests? Could reducing trade with China really be advantageous for the US and the EU? Would a defensive US approach towards China cause collateral damage to its European allies?
