Politics needs images. Helmut Schmidt, the “media chancellor”, was well aware of this. But how can democratic values be conveyed through images? And which images pose a threat to democracy, both then and now? In this themed tour of the exhibition “Schmidt! Living Democracy”, we will explore the development of the media, political imagery and phenomena in political communication throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, and ask the question: what might the democracy of tomorrow look like?

Hamburg Press Freedom Week, under the motto “Between the Lines”, will take place in Hamburg from 11 to 17 October.
