The Bundeskanzler-Helmut-Schmidt-Stiftung commemorates one of the most important German statesmen of the 20th century and, as a future-orientated think tank, addresses issues that also moved Schmidt as a thought leader. Three overarching themes are at the centre of the foundation's programme: 1) Europe and international politics, 2) global markets and social justice and 3) democracy and society.
Closely linked to these programme lines, the permanent exhibition "Schmidt! Living Democracy" in Hamburg's city centre reflects almost a century of German and international contemporary history. It categorises the work of its namesake in current and historical contexts. In the Helmut Schmidt Archive in Hamburg-Langenhorn, the Foundation makes the private documents of Schmidt and his wife Loki available to researchers and grants the public access to the Schmidts' former private home.
The foundation was established by the Bundestag in 2017 as one of the seven non-partisan political memorial foundations of the federal government. It is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
Our topics
How can the European Union remain a "peace project" and further expand its foreign policy role as a "peace power"? What will a world look like in which the political and economic balance of power is increasingly shifting in China's favour? How can international regulations be organised in such a way that financial, ecological and social upheavals can be better managed in the future? And what consequences will the shift of debates to digital spaces or the handling of populist positions have for democracy and social cohesion?
Based on the work of our namesake, three programme lines form the focus of the foundation's work: 1. Europe and international politics, 2. global markets and social justice and 3. democracy and society.
In their academic work, the Foundation's experts analyse current issues in these areas and bring together representatives from civil society, politics and research in innovative event and publication formats. It is particularly important to them to think about topics in an interdisciplinary way, to open up global perspectives and to consider phenomena not only in their current but also in their historical context.
