The Helmut Schmidt Lecture focuses on social and political topics that have already shaped Helmut Schmidt's work and have lost none of their relevance to this day. The series of events brings together international personalities from politics, academia and civil society and creates space for debates on democracy, human rights, globalisation and social cohesion.

Travelling exhibition #ChallengingDemocracy

Democracy is a challenge - every day. The travelling exhibition #ChallengingDemocracy takes a biographical look at Schmidt as an actor in contemporary history and combines the themes of the late 1960s to 1980s with current challenges. Then as now, the questions are: What protects and what threatens democracy? How social is democracy? How sustainable is democracy?

Questions about the permanent exhibition?

Dr. Magnus KochHead of Exhibitions and History

Magnus combines in-depth expertise on the life and political career of Helmut Schmidt with public history formats centered on the foundation’s exhibition projects. Central to this work is always the question of how history and the present are interconnected.

He studied history in Göttingen and earned his doctorate at the University of Erfurt on the everyday history of World War II. Since 2005, he has worked both independently and as a staff member and exhibition curator for institutions including the German Historical Museum in Berlin, the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Hamburg Institute for Social Research, and the University of Vienna.
