#ChallengingDemocracy - From Helmut Schmidt to today

Democracy is a challenge—every day. The exhibition takes a biographical look at Schmidt as an actor in contemporary history and connects the historical themes and debates of the late 1960s to the 1980s in the Federal Republic of Germany with current challenges. Then as now, the questions arise: What protects democracy? What threatens democracy? How social is democracy? How sustainable is democracy?

Current stop: Traunstein

#ChallengingDemocracy will be on display from 4 July to 22 July 2026 at the Kulturforum Klosterkirche Traunstein, Ludwigstraße 10, 83278 Traunstein. Opening hours: Monday–Sunday, 11am–7pm; free admission.

About the exhibition

#ChallengingDemocracy – From Helmut Schmidt to the present day

How do we cope with globalisation, digitalisation and climate change? How can we make our lives and economies more sustainable and our society more socially just? And how do we deal with those who offer overly simplistic answers to these complex questions? Democracy challenges us every day. Preserving it also means making the most of the freedoms and opportunities it offers us all.

Exhibition bridges the past and the present

Helmut Schmidt was Chancellor during a time of upheaval. These changes posed problems for politics, society and the economy alike. Many of the issues that concern us today were already being discussed with great passion 50 years ago. Solutions had to be negotiated then, and must be negotiated now: in parliament, at the kitchen table, on the streets, with heart and mind, tenaciously and with a willingness to compromise, with visionary strength and pragmatic action. Democracy requires all of this – and it calls on all of us.

What’s it all about?

Spanning around 120 square metres, across nine stations, with over 100 photos, documents and historical film footage, a model railway and a hamster, we invite you to form your own picture of the political and social debates of the 1960s to the 1980s. Who is arguing and in what way about:

  • Finite resources and the energy of the future: How sustainable is democracy?
  • Re-armament and peace policy: What protects democracy?
  • Social issues and economic policy decisions: How social is democracy?
  • Emergency laws and the Red Army Faction: What threatens democracy?

One section of the exhibition is dedicated to the life of Helmut Schmidt. We highlight key moments in his political and private life, take a look behind the scenes of political staging, and explore the many images of Schmidt that continue to resonate today.

Democracy needs you – yes, but how?

Getting to know other perspectives and talking to one another is the foundation of a vibrant democracy. You too are invited to play a part in the exhibition: What are your views on current issues of debate? What are your political priorities? Take on the challenges right here in the exhibition or grab a democratic challenge to take with you!
