How can democracy remain effective in times of polarisation, disinformation and growing mistrust? What structures help to ensure that democratic societies remain stable even under pressure?
These questions will be addressed by:
Prof. Dr Jan-Werner Müller, Professor of Politics at Princeton University. The political scientist has been conducting research into democracy, populism and political representation for many years. In his keynote address, ‘On the Critical Infrastructure of Democracy’, he examines the foundations on which democratic societies depend – from resilient institutions and a free public sphere to the trust of citizens.
In the subsequent panel discussion, representatives from politics, the media and civil society will discuss current challenges facing democracy and the prerequisites for social cohesion.
The reception, featuring a flying buffet, will provide an opportunity for informal discussion.
