Schmidt! Living democracy: What does the exhibition offer?

The exhibition is called: Schmidt! Living democracy.

There is a democracy in Germany.

That means:

The people in Germany decide on politics.

They elect representatives.

The representatives are usually members of a party.

Helmut Schmidt was a member of the SPD party.

That is the abbreviation for: Social Democratic Partei Deutschland

The exhibition is about 100 years of history.

It is about the history of Germany and the world.

History means: important events in the past.

You can see exciting objects, pictures and texts.

We also invite you to talk to us about democracy.

The exhibition deals with topics

that people argued about when Helmut Schmidt was Chancellor.

That was between 1974 and 1982.

For example, the energy supply.

Petroleum for heating or petrol for driving a car

were becoming scarce and expensive at the time.

Helmut Schmidt therefore wanted to have nuclear power plants built.

Nuclear power plants produce a lot of electricity.

But they need radioactive substances to do so.

These substances are very dangerous,

because they emit deadly radiation.

Many people were therefore against nuclear power stations.

The exhibition also aims to answer these questions:

  • Who was Helmut Schmidt?
  • What topics interested him?
  • And what did he stand for?

We show objects from his life.

We also tell the stories behind them.

For example, about his chess game or his pilot's cap.

A pilot's cap is actually for sailors.

But Helmut Schmidt was very fond of wearing this cap.

It was his distinguishing mark.

The exhibition is in the city centre of Hamburg.

Admission is free of charge.

The address is
