Hannelore was called Loki by everyone.

The house is still the way the Schmidt family lived in it.

There is:

  • a living room with lots of books
  • a piano that Helmut Schmidt loved to play
  • a game of chess, which he often played with his wife Loki

Helmut Schmidt also met many politicians from other countries

also met many politicians from other countries.

For example, the head of state of Russia: Leonid Brezhnev.

That was in 1978.

The private surroundings made important political discussions possible.

That was during the Cold War:

The Cold War was a major dispute between the USA and the Soviet Union.

The conflict lasted from 1947 to 1989.

The countries were enemies.

They threatened each other and showed their weapons.

To scare the other country.

But they didn't use their weapons:

That's what the word cold in Cold War stands for.

There are many other rooms in the house,

that have been preserved in their old state.

For example, the work room and a small bar.
